Description: There has been a ‘big house’ on this site since the 1500’s, when Gráinne Uaile a.k.a Grace O Malley, the famous Pirate Queen, built one of her many castles here. The Browne Family, her direct descendants, commissioned Richard Cassels to design the original house in 1730. The House has an abundance of original artefacts, artwork and treasures that will fascinate all culture-vultures with a total of 30 rooms on show.
The story of the people behind the house is equally fascinating – with a history of pirates, slave emancipators and pioneers - it couldn’t be anything but riveting! For over 300 years, the Browne’s have worked passionately to preserve this beautiful piece of Irish heritage. And the story of this commitment is told throughout the house in guided and self-guided tours, 6 permanent exhibitions including The Famine exhibition, and reading materials. Or just ask any of the staff!
After taking it all in, please enjoy a cup of tea in the restored Olde Kitchen Tea Rooms, pick up a souvenir from the Pantry Gift Shop or stroll around the beautiful gardens to take in the Greek Sarcophagus, Spanish Armada Cannons and other treasures.
