Description: Today we spend a truly wonderful day travelling in West Cork, stopping first at Gougane Barra, a parkland of breath-taking beauty, sitting at the foothills of the Sheehy Mountains and surrounded by woodland. The River Lee has its source in the Gougane Barra Lake, where it flows through the Gaeltacht village of Ballingeary and on towards Cork City.
After a stop in Bantry Town, we head to the Mizen Peninsula, tucked away in the southwest corner of Cork, it must be one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland, providing a little bit of everything that makes Ireland so unique. A visit to the Mizen Head Centre (Charge) is a must-see with its breathtaking location, sitting high on the cliffs with a magnificent rugged coastline and swirling Atlantic Ocean tides below. A wonderful exhibition including the ships bridge simulator, Marconis’ morse-code, 10th scale model of the famous Fastnet Lighthouse and of course access to the headland, a spectacular walk along the cliff edge, don’t forget your camera, the most southwesterly point of Ireland. Make sure you look out to the Teardrop of Ireland, last sighting of land for many emigrants as they crossed the Atlantic for America.
From here its back to Cork via Schull and Skibereen, stopping at Clonakilty, a charming little town in the heart of West Cork, the only competitor to have won two gold medals in the International Entente Florale Competition. A relaxing walk around this colourful town completes a very fulfiling day.
